About the event

Ten years ago, on November 22, 2014, 12-year-old Tamir Rice was killed by a Cleveland police officer. In 2016, the gazebo near which Tamir was killed was slated for demolition and erasure. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Tamir’s mother, Samaria Rice, the structure was preserved and entrusted to artist and Rebuild’s Executive Director, Theaster Gates. Since then, Rebuild Foundation has served as its steward, commissioning artists to reflect on this memorial and honor Tamir’s legacy.


On Saturday, November 23, join us, Samaria Rice, and the University of Chicago's Center for the Study of Race, Politics & Culture for a day of reflection, healing, and action.


The program will begin with an hour of reflection hosted by Damon Williams, cofounder of the Let Us Breathe Collective.
