About the event
We are thrilled to present 'In the Eye of the Beholder' by Chicago-born artist Gerald Lovell in our collaboration with Anthony Gallery. Through a series paintings inspired by his own photographic lens, this body of work explores themes of migration, memory and place. For Lovell, painting is an act of biography. Born in Chicago to Puerto Rican and Black parents, Lovell’s portraits refuse the notion that all Black figures put down on canvas are somehow political by imbuing his subjects with social agency and the power of self-determination.
Sourcing images from self-portraits, photographs of friends and family, and travels, Lovell records passing memories and fleeting emotions, concretizing them in the collective consciousness by combining attenuated and impressionistic brushwork with thick daubs of impasto on canvas.
This exhibition is presented as part of a yearlong collaboration between Rebuild Foundation and Anthony Gallery to spotlight emerging and established contemporary artists, with an emphasis on Black and Brown practitioners.
‘In the Eye of the Beholder’ will open to the public on May 12th with a celebration at the Arts Bank from 5 to 8 PM. This exhibition will be on view Thursdays through Sundays from 12pm to 6pm from May 13, 2022, to June 19, 2022.
